The Game of Cans may not change the world, but it just might spark the mind that does!
The "Game of Cans" began in the summer of 1943 on a concrete sidewalk on the north side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Young Darlow Wank (AKA Mr. Cans) and a couple of his friends were said to be the first ones on the block to crush a soda can and use it for the game we now call "Cans!"
The objective of the Game of Cans is for each contestant to strike or hit their selected opponent's crushed cans by shooting an airborne basketball, similar to a basketball jump shot. The two Cans Pads used for playing cans are placed on opposite sides of each other, usually separated by a distance of 17-20 feet apart. Each Cans Pad has scoring slot circles used to hold the crushed cans. The slot circles consist of 10, 20, 30 and 40 points for scoring. The contestant that reaches a score of 100 points or more, first by striking their opponent's crushed cans with a basketball is the winner. Contestants are encouraged to stand directly on the Cans Pads, but both feet must be behind the designated line while shooting for points!
Additional Notes
1. Points may be scored by standing directly on the Cans Pad or by standing on the side or behind of the Cans Pad. Numerous ways for scoring are permitted as long as your feet are behind the designated Cans Pad line.
2. Winning points may exceed 100 points as long as a minimum of 100 points is met to win the game...for example, scores of 110 or 130 are permitted to win the game, even though they are over 100 points.
3. Points can only be scored with an airborne jump shot motion. Bouncing or rolling the basketball to hit or strike your opponent's Cans does not score points!
